ARIKAKI SEMINARS
What an incredible two weeks
training with this Okinawan Master who never ceases to amaze you with
his knowledge of karate, his eye for detail and the amount of power you
can generate with the slightest changes of position etc.
During his stay in England he
was taken to many sights in and around England, the highlight being the
tour of London on an open top bus seeing the major cites in the city.
We are now partners with Kodokan
in Okinawa and it is the start of a new friendship as our karate family
continues to grow.
My heartfelt thanks to Arikaki
Sensei and Ryuta, his son, for the good times we shared as well as the
great karate they shared with us.
Arikaki's Background
Sensei Arakaki 9th Dan is the founder of the
Kodokan association which practices traditional Shorinryu style
karate from the Itosu lineage. When he was 12 years old his father
took him to learn under the well known Okinawan karate teacher
Yuchoku Higa with whom he trained with until Higa passed away in
1994 at the age of 84. In 1993 Sensei Arakaki was awarded the title
of 8th Dan by his teacher Yuchoku Higa. The Kodokan group have
branches in mainland Japan, Argentina, Uruguay, Italy & India.
Sensei Arakaki is particularly associated with the methodical
teaching of Naihanchi kata which is considered to be fundamental to
good karate. A favourite kata of Sensei's is Sochin which he has
demonstrated at several public events including the recent 2009
Okinawa Traditional Karate Do World Tournament in Naha.
Sensei Arakaki's teacher Hanshi Yuchoku Higa 10th Dan (1910
- 1994) was famous for his powerful punching technique. Prior to WW
II Higa had studied Shorinryu for 6 years under Jiro Shiroma a
direct student of Itosu until Shiroma passed away in 1933.
Subsequently Higa became a student of Jin'an Shinzato learning
Gojuryu until Shinzato's tragic death in a US bombing raid in 1945.
Jin'an Shinzato is noted as being the senior student of Chojun
Miyagi the founder of the Goju style of karate . In 1945 Higa became
a student of the famous Bushi Chosin Chibana of the Kobayashi style
of Shorinryu with whom he continued to train becoming a Deshi &
assistant instructor. Hanshi Chosin Chibana (1885 - 1969) is
considered to be one of the foremost students of Itosu.
Mastering Shotokan Karate
is
now available to buy.
Aimed at black belts to further their
understanding of this dynamic martial art and demonstrating the depths
of developing power over any distance and demonstrating the high level
blocking techniques with open hand and closed fists.
Apart from the training and
sight-seeing here is a website with regard to the southern most islands
of Okinawa that is worth a visit - the plans are to spend 5/7 days here
during the '12 tour!
I thought it may be worth
mentioning, although it is early yet, but for those wanting to plan
their holiday much further ahead may well consider a proposed tour to
Okinawa in the Summer of 2012. A group of our German friends are
intending a three week tour of Japan and Okinawa and possibly one of the
tropical islands to the far south of Okinawa is on the cards
too...karate, holiday etc...temperatures around 26 - 32 degrees too!
More information in the
Autumn...
